曹螢,自1998至2002年間在德國埃森大學(現杜伊斯堡-埃森大學)攻讀博士學位。其間從事發育生物學研究。于2002年獲得博士學位,并以優異成績畢業(Graduated summa cum laude)。在2002至2008年間,在德國烏爾姆大學繼續從事胚胎細胞分化的機理研究工作。自2008年起,加入伟德官网手机版模式動物研究所,從事胚胎細胞和癌細胞的分化機理研究,揭示在腫瘤的發生發展在複雜性表象下的普遍規律,以及腫瘤和胚胎發育之間的内在統一性:1)腫瘤發生發展的過程是細胞失去原有特性并獲得神經幹性的過程;2)神經幹性是細胞緻瘤性和多能性分化潛能的基礎,這是由神經細胞狀态的進化優勢決定的;3)胚胎發育過程中的神經誘導決定胚胎發育,而在出生後動物(包括人)中,一個相似的過程決定腫瘤形成。這些發現不僅揭示了癌細胞的本質特性是神經幹性,也将兩種關鍵細胞特性,緻瘤性和多能性分化潛能統一起來,也就是将胚胎發育和腫瘤形成統一起來。
